You can reduce your overhead costs and focus on what your company actually does without overextending your staff. But there are certain services and aspects of your business that you should never, ever outsource.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don\u2019t Outsource Core Competencies<\/h2><p>\u201cIf you are a recruiting firm, don\u2019t outsource your recruiters. If you are a chef, don\u2019t hire somebody to design your menu. If you are a tech startup, don\u2019t outsource your technology,\u201d writes Keith Cowing in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/tech-startups-never-outsource-your-technology-2010-12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Business Insider<\/a>. Part of developing an\u00a0<a class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/woocommerce-889328-3356156.cloudwaysapps.com\/outsourcing-best-practices\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">effective outsourcing<\/a>\u00a0plan is determining what your company is really good at-what sets you apart from the competition and gives you an edge. Do you specialize in marketing automation? Maybe inbound marketing is your company\u2019s passion? Figure out your company\u2019s core competencies, whatever they are, and then keep them in-house. Don\u2019t farm out these services to third-party talent; you want those talented individuals to work for you.<\/p><p>That\u2019s not to say you can\u2019t outsource certain support services directly related to these core competencies. For instance, hiring freelance writers and editors to write and edit the content involved in your inbound marketing efforts would be fine. Just be sure that the person or team making the business or editorial decisions-what topics to cover, what channels you use to disseminate content-stays in-house.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don\u2019t Outsource Termination Management<\/h2><p>We all saw\u00a0<em>Up in the Air<\/em>, right? How awful was it to watch people get fired by complete strangers? Don\u2019t do that to your employees, even soon-to-be former ones. There are several third-party companies that offer this service, but please handle this unpleasant aspect internally.<\/p><p>\u201cUltimately a manager (and potential leader) needs to be able to meet face to face with their employees and deliver both good and bad news,\u201d writes financial expert Robert Pagliarini in a 2011 CBS\u00a0<a class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/5-things-you-should-never-outsource-and-5-you-should\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">MoneyWatch<\/a>\u00a0article. He does add that consulting outside experts is acceptable; this might be particularly useful if you\u2019re in the unfortunate position of firing or laying off a large group of people.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don\u2019t Outsource a Problem<\/h2><p>You can\u2019t run a company without encountering some headaches along the way. The solution, however, is never outsourcing. If you don\u2019t understand how to solve a problem, it\u2019s not a good idea to blindly hand the situation over to a third party. You won\u2019t be sure if they\u2019ve developed an effective solution, and chances are they\u2019ll have missed certain important criteria that are normally supplied by the client. Ultimately, you\u2019re bound to have an unsuccessful relationship with that vendor.<\/p><p>This is especially true of technology and software issues, particularly if you\u2019re a startup. By relying on third parties from the beginning to solve tech challenges, you miss out on the chance to gain a complete understanding of how your technology works.<\/p><p>\u201cIssues that I\u2019ve seen emerge include non-scalable architecture, poor code that is not reusable, and a general lack of understanding your technology backbone,\u201d writes tech expert\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/harrisgoodman\/2013\/12\/19\/how-outsourcing-can-kill-culture-good-products-and-innovation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Harris Goodman<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<em>Forbes.<\/em><em>\u00a0\u201c<\/em>Inevitably, you will also create a reliance on your contractors to do QA and bug fixes going forward.\u201d<\/p><p>When outsourcing tricky issues, make sure the team in charge has a thorough understanding of what needs to be accomplished and the benchmarks they\u2019ll use to measure the final product.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don\u2019t Outsource Managers<\/h2><p>Whatever you decide to outsource, it\u2019s not a one and done deal. Your company still needs a dedicated team to stay in touch with vendors, keeping tabs on progress and answering any questions they may have. Don\u2019t rely on your vendor to be your manager as well, or you may experience delays, confusion, and low-quality work.<\/p><p>\u201cContractors and freelancers, like any other business, manage their own internal processes, but they can\u2019t manage your business,\u201d writes startup consultant\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/martinzwilling\/2014\/06\/17\/10-key-outsourcing-mistakes-made-by-entrepreneurs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Martin Zwilling<\/a>. \u201cDon\u2019t over-manage remote workers, but don\u2019t expect them to manage your business.
