AI SDRs: what works and what doesn't

AI SDR or a junior SDR first? The cost and ramp math for a small sales team

Published AI SDR plans usually cost less on the sticker than a junior hire's salary, and a new SDR often needs about three months to ramp. For a tiny team, compare them on opportunities your sellers accept—not on the sticker alone.

Our view

  • Founders and sales heads with one to five sellers ask this nearly every week: buy an AI SDR (software that finds people and writes to them) or hire a junior sales development rep first. Cost tables online mostly stop at cost per meeting. That is the wrong scoreboard if the meetings do not become opportunities your team would work.
  • On money: published AI SDR plans we opened in October 2026 start far below a full-time salary. AiSDR lists Solo at $250 a month, Explore at $900, and Scale at $2,500 (Explore and Scale on quarterly contracts). SDR Pilot lists plans from $97 to $497 a month for a LinkedIn-sender model. Betts Recruiting's May 2025 guide puts entry-level SDR base pay commonly at $55,000–$70,000 in tech, before benefits, tools, recruiting, and coaching time. We are not putting our own prices on this page. For the costs beyond the plan (setup, mailboxes, warm-up, review hours), see what an AI SDR really costs, all in.
  • On time: The Bridge Group's 2025 research is widely cited at about 3.0 months average ramp for an SDR. Small teams without a playbook often take longer. An AI tool can start sending sooner on the calendar, but it still needs clean targeting, warmed sending, and someone reading what goes out. AiSDR's own pricing page says teams see their strongest results after about six weeks.
  • How to choose:
    1. If product-market fit is still fuzzy, keep founders selling. Neither a junior hire nor an AI SDR will invent the message for you.
    2. Write down what counts as an accepted opportunity before you start.
    3. Prefer the path that puts conversations on accounts your team owns, and that you would be happy to put your name on.
    4. Set a check-in date (six to eight weeks is common) and stop or change course if you only have volume, not opportunities.
  • When we're not the right fit: if you need phone-led volume into a huge market, or you want fully hands-off sending with no review, look elsewhere. We are also a poor fit if nobody on your side can take meetings when they land.

What the evidence says

  • Entry SDR pay ranges (recruiting firm) — Betts Recruiting, “Top SDR Compensation Trends in Tech for 2025”, published May 23, 2025 (link). Checked October 5, 2026. Betts sells recruiting, not AI SDRs. They put entry-level SDR base typically at $55,000–$70,000, and $60,000–$75,000 with at least six months of experience, with OTE varying by region. Treat these as market ranges, not a promise for your city.
  • Published AI SDR pricing (vendors in category) — AiSDR pricing page (aisdr.com/pricing), checked October 5, 2026: Solo $250/mo, Explore $900/mo, Scale $2,500/mo; Explore and Scale require quarterly contracts. SDR Pilot pricing (sdrpilot.ai/pricing), checked October 5, 2026: $97 / $297 / $497 a month. Many other AI SDR vendors are quote-only; we do not invent numbers for them.
  • Ramp time (cited Bridge Group 2025) — Leadriver's September 17, 2026 ramp article (link; Leadriver sells lead generation services) attributes average SDR ramp of 3.0 months and 60% quota attainment to The Bridge Group's 2025 study. The Bridge Group's citation page (link) describes a 351-company survey from 2025; the full numbers sit in their report. Provena's October 3, 2026 vertical-SaaS guide cites the same 3.0-month ramp and 60% attainment. We checked all three pages on October 5, 2026.
  • Competitor cost tables — Salesworx published an AI SDR vs human SDR cost piece on October 1, 2026 (link). They sell an AI SDR. Their fully loaded human-SDR and meeting-volume figures are theirs; we do not repeat them here as facts. The useful takeaway for a small team is the same one we use: sticker price and cost-per-meeting are incomplete without accepted opportunities and ownership of the conversations.

Common questions

Is an AI SDR cheaper than hiring a junior SDR?

On the sticker, usually yes. Published AI SDR plans we checked in October 2026 start around $97 to $250 a month at the low end and run up to about $2,500 a month at higher tiers, while entry-level SDR base pay in tech is commonly listed in the mid–five figures a year before benefits, tools, and management time. Cheaper to buy is not the same as cheaper per accepted opportunity.

How long does a junior SDR take to ramp?

The Bridge Group's 2025 research is widely cited at about 3.0 months average ramp to full productivity. That figure comes from a study of hundreds of B2B companies; small teams without a written playbook often take longer. An AI tool still needs setup, list quality, and message review before you trust what goes out.

Should a tiny sales team use an AI SDR or hire a junior SDR first?

If your offer and ideal customer are still fuzzy, neither will save you—founders should keep selling. If the motion is proven and you need more conversations, an AI SDR can start faster on the calendar; a junior hire learns your voice and can grow into the role. Either way, score them on opportunities your sales team accepts, and decide who owns the relationships when you stop.

Is it better to hire SDRs or use an AI outbound platform?

Hire when you can coach someone, have a clear territory, and want a person who can grow into closing. Use an AI outbound platform when the work is repeatable and you will still review messages and define what a real opportunity is. Many teams end up with a hybrid. Our hire vs agency vs AI SDR guide walks through the three-way choice.

What should I measure in the first 90 days?

Count opportunities your sales team accepts, not emails sent or meetings booked. Read a sample of what went out. Check that the domains and LinkedIn accounts used are still in good standing. Pick a check-in date before you start and write down what you need to see by then.
