Hire an SDR, sign an SDR agency, or buy an AI SDR?

Hire an SDR if you want prospecting built in-house and can carry about three months of ramp. Sign an SDR agency if you need outbound running fast and accept that its reps do the work. Buy an AI SDR for high-volume plays you will supervise. If your sellers are credible, consider a managed service run from their profiles.

Choose the option that fits your situation

Hire an SDR if

you want prospecting as a permanent in-house function, you have a manager with time to coach, you can wait out ramp, and you want a bench that can grow into AE roles.

Sign an SDR agency if

you need outbound running quickly, nobody internal can manage reps, phone is central to your motion, or you want to test a market before hiring. Get CRM write access and ownership of the activity in the contract.

Buy an AI SDR if

your offer and ICP are proven, your plays are high-volume and lower-touch, and someone on your team will own the messaging and check what goes out under your name.

Choose a managed service from your own team (Audienti) if

your sellers are credible in your market but spend their time prospecting, you'd rather not add headcount or rent someone else's reps, and you want every relationship and record to stay with your company.

Audienti is the wrong fit if

you don't have a proven offer yet, nobody on the team can credibly represent the company, you lack a working CRM or can't follow up fast, you need phone-led or very high-volume outreach, you want to build an SDR-to-AE talent pipeline, or you can't commit to a 90-day initial term.

What does each option actually cost?

The headline numbers hide most of the cost. Here is what to budget for each option.

In-house SDR: a loaded-cost formula

Start with salary. The Bridge Group's 2025 report puts median SDR on-target earnings at $80,000 ($55K base, $25K variable). Then add benefits and payroll taxes, tools and data licenses, recruiting costs amortized over average tenure, and a share of manager time. SDR manager median OTE is $146,000 (Bridge Group 2025). Your fully loaded annual cost = salary + benefits/taxes + tools + (recruiting ÷ tenure) + (manager cost × share of their time). Put your own numbers into the opportunity model.

SDR agency: three pricing models

Agencies price on retainers, per-meeting fees, or hybrids. Public offers we checked range from about $3,500 a month (Leadium cold-calling program) to $11,950 per four weeks for a dedicated SDR (SalesRoads). Note the four-week billing: 13 invoices a year, not 12. EBQ lists $5,000/month half-time or $10,000/month full-time, with prices reflecting an annual commitment (EBQ). Ask what is and is not included—data, tools, management—and get the all-in number.

AI SDR: published tiers plus hidden costs

AiSDR publishes $250/month (Solo), $900/month (Explore), and $2,500/month (Scale); Explore and Scale require quarterly contracts (AiSDR). Artisan is quote-only, with pricing scoped by leads contacted (Artisan). 11x has no public pricing page—we checked and got a 404. Beyond the subscription, budget for data enrichment, extra mailboxes, and the time your team spends reviewing output.

Audienti: $7,500 a month

The standard plan is $7,500 a month for three people from your team, with a 90-day initial term. At our target of nine accepted opportunities a month across three people, that works out to about $833 per accepted opportunity—a planning number, not a guarantee. We do not tell you what an SDR costs you; put your own numbers into the model and see what the comparison says. Full pricing details.

How long until each option produces pipeline?

Hiring takes recruiting time, then ramp. The Bridge Group's 2025 average is 3.0 months to full productivity (source). An agency depends on onboarding and rep assignment—ask for a dated launch plan in the proposal. AI SDRs advertise setup in minutes to hours, but mailbox warm-up and message tuning add time. With Audienti, timing depends on how ready your positioning is: if your messaging and target list are clear, outreach starts once the premise is approved; if they need work, we build the premise with you first, before anything goes to market.

Who owns the relationships and the data?

This is the question that matters most when the engagement ends.

An in-house SDR builds their network on their own LinkedIn profile. When they leave—and average SDR tenure is 1.9 years—that network goes with them. Agencies vary: some use their own reps' profiles, some set up sending infrastructure in your name. Ask in writing who owns the conversations and connections when the contract ends. AI SDRs use your domains and connected accounts, but the messages are machine-written under your name. With Audienti, outreach runs from your team's own LinkedIn profiles, connections land on their accounts, and everything syncs to your CRM with the signal that surfaced each prospect.

Can I see all agency activity in my CRM?

You should be able to. Ask whether every touch—emails, calls, LinkedIn messages—is written to your CRM in real time, with the same fields you use internally. That visibility is what lets you measure cost per accepted opportunity the same way across every option. If you need a transparent setup where all prospecting activity appears in your own system, see how that works with Audienti.

Can an AI SDR replace a human SDR?

For some plays, yes. AI SDRs work best on high-volume, lower-touch outreach with a proven offer and a human owner who checks output. They can research at scale, draft messages, and send without manual work per contact. Where they break: generic messaging that sounds like everyone else, wrong details when the AI hallucinates, deliverability problems at volume, and platform rules that restrict automation. Most ranking guides on this topic land on human-in-the-loop—a person reviewing or approving what goes out. If you are evaluating an AI SDR or recovering after one disappointed, read the full comparison. For why AI SDRs get cancelled and what your alternatives are, see our answer on AI SDR alternatives.

Is there a way to get more pipeline without adding headcount or renting reps?

Yes. A managed service can run prospecting from the people you already have, so the relationships, reputation, and CRM records stay with your company.

Here is how Audienti works:

  1. Premise. We build a written premise: why a specific buyer should care now, tied to what your company does and who it helps.
  2. Signals. We watch for live signals—job changes, funding, content engagement, company news—that make the premise true for a specific person.
  3. Research. When a signal fires, we research the person, their company, and their situation to find the genuine opening.
  4. Outreach. Outreach is LinkedIn first, from your team's own profiles, with email as a secondary channel. New buyer-facing messages get human review until the system has learned your voice; our operators do the reviewing by default.
  5. CRM sync. Everything lands in your CRM with the signal that surfaced each prospect. Your team takes the meeting and accepts or rejects the opportunity.

Meetings with the right people. Opportunities Knit could work.

Knit sells vendor-performance management to enterprise CIOs and their teams. Knit wanted more qualified pipeline from its own team. With Audienti, Knit reached relevant buyers, booked meetings, and turned those conversations into opportunities in its own pipeline. Prospects and their activity appeared in Knit's HubSpot, so Matt and his team could see the work and advance the relationships.

“The meetings were with the right people, and they became opportunities in our pipeline.”

Matt Glenn Matt Glenn, CEO, Knit

How should I compare the options fairly?

Use one metric: cost per client-accepted opportunity. Total monthly cost divided by the opportunities your team accepts, counted the same way in your CRM for every option.

An accepted opportunity means:

  1. The account fits an ICP you agreed on
  2. A real buyer is in the conversation
  3. They confirmed a real problem, project, or priority
  4. They want to look at a solution or take a next step
  5. The evidence is in your CRM
  6. Your team says yes, this is an opportunity

Booked meetings and held meetings are not the same thing as accepted opportunities. Counting them separately keeps the comparison honest. See the full definition on the pricing page.

Which option fits my stage?

The right answer depends on your offer maturity, team size, management capacity, and deal shape. This matrix reflects Audienti's view.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about choosing between hiring, agencies, AI SDRs, and managed services.

Should I hire an SDR or use an SDR agency?

Hire if you want a permanent in-house prospecting function and have a manager to run it. Use an agency if you need outbound running quickly and nobody internal can manage reps. Compare both on cost per opportunity your team accepts, not on meetings booked.

Is an AI SDR better than hiring an SDR?

For high-volume, lower-touch plays on a proven offer, an AI SDR can be cheaper per contact. For complex, senior sales, human judgment and credibility usually matter more. Many teams end up having a human review what the AI drafts.

What are the alternatives to hiring an SDR?

An SDR agency, an AI SDR, founder- or AE-led outbound, or a managed service that runs prospecting from your existing team's profiles, such as Audienti.

How do you build an outbound motion without a full-time SDR team?

Write down the premise (why a specific buyer should care now), watch for the signals that make it true, and run outreach from the people buyers want to hear from, with a service or tooling doing the research and prep.

Who owns the leads and LinkedIn connections with each option?

With an in-house SDR, the network sits on their personal profile and leaves when they do. Agencies vary by contract. AI SDRs use your connected accounts. With Audienti, outreach runs from your team's own profiles, and the connections stay with them. Put ownership in the contract.

How much does each option cost per month?

An SDR costs salary, benefits, tools, and management time. Agency pricing varies by model—see the comparison table for sourced examples. AI SDRs run $250 to $2,500 a month on published plans. Audienti is $7,500 a month for three people from your team. Every figure links to its source below.

Is Audienti an AI SDR or an agency?

Neither. Audienti is a managed prospecting service: $7,500 a month, three people from your team, 90-day initial term. Outreach is LinkedIn first, from your team's own profiles, with email as a secondary channel. New messages get human review until they're right, and everything syncs to your CRM. Success is measured by opportunities your team accepts.
