Choosing how to find customers

What is an SDR motion?

An SDR motion is the repeatable way your company uses sales development reps (SDRs), or tools doing that job, to start conversations with possible buyers and hand the qualified ones to sellers. It covers who you target, what prompts the outreach, which channels you use, what counts as a qualified handoff, and how you measure it.

Our view

  • "Motion" is sales shorthand for a process you can run again and again. An SDR motion is the part of your sales process that creates first conversations. It's worth naming because many teams hire SDRs or buy tools before agreeing on what the motion is supposed to produce.
  • The three common types:
    1. Inbound: SDRs follow up quickly on people who raised their hand, such as a demo request or a content download, and qualify them.
    2. Outbound: SDRs reach out to accounts that haven't contacted you yet, usually from a target list.
    3. Signal-based: outbound, but triggered by a sign that an account may need you now, such as a new leader, a hiring push or a funding round. See what buyer signals are.
  • The six parts of any SDR motion:
    1. Which accounts and people you target.
    2. What prompts the outreach (a list, a hand-raise or a signal).
    3. Which channels you use, such as LinkedIn, email or phone.
    4. What the message says and who approves it.
    5. What counts as a qualified handoff to a seller.
    6. How you measure success.
  • The job it's hired to do: an SDR motion exists to create opportunities your sellers accept and want to work. Activity counts (calls, emails, meetings booked) are inputs. If sellers keep rejecting the meetings, the motion isn't working, however busy it looks.
  • Signs your motion needs fixing: sellers say meetings are poor fit; nobody can say what a qualified handoff is; the target list was built once and never revisited; or results depend on one rep who might leave.
  • Who runs it: in-house SDRs, an agency, AI SDR software, a managed service, or founders and account executives doing their own outreach. Our hire vs agency vs AI SDR guide compares them. We run signal-based, LinkedIn-first motions from your team's own profiles and measure them by opportunities your sales team accepts. We're not the right fit for inbound lead follow-up or phone-led, high-volume outbound.

What the evidence says

  • How common SDR teams are, and how they're studied — The Bridge Group has studied the SDR role ten times. Its 2025 report, "SDR Models, Motions & Metrics", is based on 351 B2B companies with sales development groups, surveyed in 2025, and covers organizational structure, ramp and retention, metrics and quota, compensation and tech, and leadership (citation page, checked October 5, 2026). The detailed figures sit in the report itself.
  • Ramp time — Leadriver's SDR ramp article (link, checked October 5, 2026; Leadriver sells lead generation services) cites the Bridge Group 2025 study for an average SDR ramp of 3.0 months. A new motion takes at least that long to judge fairly if it depends on new hires.
  • Our own definition — The "job it's hired to do" framing comes from our earlier field notes on SDR motions. It is our view, not an industry standard. There's no single official definition of an SDR motion; the term is used loosely across sales teams and vendors.

Common questions

What does SDR motion mean?

It's the repeatable way your company uses sales development reps, or tools doing their job, to start conversations with possible buyers and pass the qualified ones to sellers. It includes targeting, triggers, channels, messages, the handoff rule and how you measure it.

What is the difference between an inbound and an outbound SDR motion?

Inbound SDRs follow up on people who contacted you first, such as demo requests. Outbound SDRs reach out to accounts that haven't contacted you. A signal-based motion is outbound triggered by a sign the account may need you now.

How do you measure an SDR motion?

By opportunities your sellers accept and work, not by activity. Track calls, emails and meetings booked as inputs, but judge the motion on accepted opportunities and what they turn into.

Do you need SDRs to have an SDR motion?

No. The motion is the process, not the job title. Founders, account executives, AI SDR software, an agency or a managed service can all run it, as long as targeting, handoff and measurement are defined.

How long before you can judge a new SDR motion?

Plan on at least a quarter. If it depends on new hires, the Bridge Group's 2025 study is cited at an average ramp of 3.0 months. Set a check-in date before you start and decide in advance what results you need to see.
