Should you hire an SDR? What it costs, how long it takes, and what else works

Hire an SDR when you want a permanent prospecting role and have a manager to run it. Budget more than salary: The Bridge Group's 2025 median SDR package is $80K OTE, average ramp is 3.0 months, and average tenure is 1.9 years. If you need pipeline sooner without headcount, compare an agency or a managed service.

How much does it really cost to hire an SDR?

Start with on-target earnings. The Bridge Group's 2025 report puts the median at $80,000, split 68/32 between base ($55K) and variable ($25K). That split has held steady since 2022. (Source)

Now add the load:

  • Benefits and payroll taxes: your HR or finance team knows the rate
  • Tools and data: CRM seat, sequencing platform, dialer, data licenses—add up what you pay
  • Recruiting: job board fees, recruiter time, interview time. Amortize across average tenure (1.9 years)
  • Manager time: SDR manager median OTE is $146K (Bridge Group 2025). Estimate what share of that time goes to each rep

For a second view on pay, Betts Recruiting's May 2025 guide puts entry-level SDR base pay in tech commonly at $55,000–$70,000, and $60,000–$75,000 with at least six months of experience (Betts, checked October 5, 2026).

We deliberately do not tell you what an SDR costs you—the variables differ too much. Put your own numbers into a loaded-cost formula and compare the result to other options. Run your own numbers in the opportunity model.

How long does a new SDR take to ramp, and what does year one buy?

The Bridge Group's 2025 average ramp is 3.0 months. That clock starts after the person is hired—add recruiting time before it begins. During ramp, you pay full cost for partial output. (Source)

Related benchmarks from the same report:

  • Average tenure: 1.9 years
  • Median annual attrition: 40%
  • Percent of reps at quota: 60%

These are not arguments against hiring. They are planning inputs. If you need a permanent prospecting function, you will carry these costs. The question is whether the first-year economics justify the role, or whether you should build pipeline another way while you recruit.

How does an AI SDR or an SDR assistant compare on cost?

"SDR assistant" can mean two things, so check which one you're pricing.

  • AI SDR software. Published plans we checked on October 5, 2026: AiSDR lists $250, $900 and $2,500 a month (Explore and Scale on quarterly contracts); SDR Pilot lists $97, $297 and $497 a month with a 14-day free trial. Artisan sets pricing through its sales team, and 11x publishes no prices. Add data, extra mailboxes and the time someone spends reviewing what goes out.
  • A human assistant for your sellers, such as a virtual assistant who builds lists and does research. Rates vary widely by country and provider, so we don't quote a number. Get two or three written quotes and count the hours your sellers still spend checking the work.

Either way, the sticker price is lower than a salary. What matters is the cost per opportunity your team accepts. If you're weighing software against a first hire, see AI SDR or a junior SDR first?; for the wider set of options, see AI SDR alternatives.

What happens to pipeline and relationships if my SDR quits?

When an SDR leaves, three things leave with them:

  1. The LinkedIn network they built on their personal profile
  2. The relationships and context that lived in their head
  3. The productivity you paid to build during ramp

Good CRM hygiene preserves the records—meeting notes, contact data, deal history—but relationships are harder to transfer. A new SDR starting cold with the same contacts will not have the same credibility.

Contrast this with outreach from the profiles of long-tenured team members. When a founder, executive, or senior AE sends a message, the connection lands on their profile, and the relationship stays with your company as long as they do.

Is it cheaper to hire an SDR, use an agency, or neither?

Compare cost per client-accepted opportunity, not headline numbers.

In-house SDR: (Your fully loaded annual cost ÷ 12) ÷ accepted opportunities per month = cost per opportunity. Fill in your own figures.

Agency: Monthly fee ÷ accepted opportunities from the agency = cost per opportunity. Fill in your own figures.

Audienti: $7,500/month for three people, modeled at about $833 per accepted opportunity at the target of 9 a month. A planning number, not a guarantee.

Run the math with your own numbers. The opportunity model lets you compare. Full pricing details.

When is hiring an SDR the right call?

Hire when:

  • You want prospecting as a permanent in-house function
  • You have a manager with time and skill to coach
  • You can absorb 3+ months of ramp
  • You want to build a bench that can grow into AE roles
  • Phone is central to your motion and you need someone dialing
  • You have proven the motion and need to scale headcount

Hiring is an investment in capability, not just pipeline. If you need a long-term function, a strong SDR becomes an asset that compounds.

When is hiring an SDR the wrong call?

Hiring may not be the right fit when:

  • You do not have a proven offer yet—an SDR cannot fix positioning problems
  • Nobody internal can manage or coach the role
  • You cannot carry 3+ months of ramp cost for uncertain output
  • Average tenure (1.9 years) and attrition (40%) do not fit your planning horizon
  • You need outbound running fast and cannot wait for recruiting

When does a managed service from your own team fit better?

Consider a managed service when:

  • You need pipeline without adding another person
  • Your AEs, founders, or executives are credible in your market
  • You want the relationships and records to stay with your company
  • You are weighing whether to hire but are not ready to commit
  • You have a proven offer but your sellers spend too much time prospecting

Audienti runs targeting, research, and outreach from three people already on your team. New buyer-facing messages get human review until they are right; our operators handle the reviewing by default. Your team takes the meetings and accepts or rejects each opportunity.

Meetings with the right people. Opportunities Knit could work.

Knit sells vendor-performance management to enterprise CIOs and their teams. Knit wanted more qualified pipeline from its own team. With Audienti, Knit reached relevant buyers, booked meetings, and turned those conversations into opportunities in its own pipeline. Prospects and their activity appeared in Knit's HubSpot, so Matt and his team could see the work and advance the relationships.

“The meetings were with the right people, and they became opportunities in our pipeline.”

Matt Glenn Matt Glenn, CEO, Knit

Can I do both?

Yes. Some teams run Audienti while they recruit and ramp, then keep it as additional capacity once the SDR is producing. Others use it to cover a departing SDR's pipeline gap.

This is one way to use it, not a promise of results. The math still has to work on your numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about hiring an SDR versus the alternatives.

How much does it cost to hire an SDR?

Budget more than salary. The Bridge Group's 2025 median SDR on-target earnings is $80,000 ($55K base, $25K variable). Add benefits and payroll taxes, tools and data, recruiting costs, and a share of manager time. Your fully loaded annual cost = salary + benefits/taxes + tools + (recruiting ÷ tenure) + (manager cost × share of time). Put your own numbers in.

How long does a new SDR take to ramp?

The Bridge Group's 2025 average is 3.0 months to full productivity. That starts after you have found and hired the person—add recruiting time before the clock starts.

Is it cheaper to hire an SDR or use an agency?

Compare cost per client-accepted opportunity, not headline numbers. Your fully loaded monthly SDR cost ÷ accepted opportunities = cost per opportunity. Agency monthly fee ÷ accepted opportunities = cost per opportunity. Whether one is cheaper depends on your own numbers.

What are the alternatives to hiring an SDR?

An SDR agency, an AI SDR, founder- or AE-led outbound, or a managed service that runs prospecting from your existing team's profiles, such as Audienti.

Can I get more pipeline without adding headcount?

Yes. An agency rents you reps. An AI SDR automates sending. A managed service like Audienti runs prospecting from the people you already have, so you add pipeline capacity without adding a person or losing the relationships when the engagement ends.

How much does an AI SDR cost compared with hiring an SDR?

Published AI SDR plans we checked on October 5, 2026 run from $97 a month (SDR Pilot) to $2,500 a month (AiSDR Scale). The Bridge Group's 2025 median SDR package is $80,000 on-target earnings before benefits, tools and management. The software is cheaper to buy; compare both on opportunities your team accepts.

What does an SDR assistant cost?

If you mean AI SDR software, published plans start around $97 to $250 a month (SDR Pilot and AiSDR, checked October 5, 2026). If you mean a human assistant who researches and builds lists, rates vary widely by country and provider, so get written quotes.

What happens to pipeline and relationships if my SDR leaves?

Average SDR tenure is 1.9 years, with 40% annual attrition. When they leave, the network they built on their personal LinkedIn profile goes with them. Good CRM hygiene helps preserve the records, but the relationships are harder to transfer.
